Konrad appeared around the corner, nearly startling me into dropping the stack of books Vanessa had given me to re-shelve.

I braced myself against the nearest bookshelf as I tried to convince my heart to slow back down. My dampened senses were really starting to become frustrating. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”

His answering grin was too sharp to be reassuring. “Simply testing a theory.”

I raised an eyebrow. “A theory?”

“Yes.”

“What theory?” I ground out, my patience already growing thin after a day of his annoying presence.

“If I told you, it would create a bias, and my observations would no longer be valid.” He jerked a head toward the second-floor balcony. “What did Lily want earlier?”

“None of your business,” I said gleefully as I shoved past him. Two could play at his game.

“The more you run, the more pathetic you look!” he shouted after me.

I flipped him off. The last thing I was concerned about at the moment was Konrad thinking I was pathetic. That was his default view of me.

The atrium seemed like the safest place at the moment. However, my escape led me into even greater danger.

A short woman with long, black hair that contrasted sharply with the sunshine yellow sundress hugging her curves sashayed into the library. Her magenta stilettos clacked steadily against the wood floor as she swept an appraising gaze over her surroundings. When her eyes landed on me, she immediately changed course like a hawk zeroing in on its prey. I cast a desperate glance over my shoulder, but Lily was nowhere to be found, and there was nowhere to run.

Darby came to a stop right in front of me and tapped one sharply pointed nail against her bright lips as she looked me over. “Well, well. It’s Roark, right?”

I swallowed, a little shiver of fear going down my spine as the woman’s aura brushed against mine. The touch felt intentional…and threatening. I forced a charming smile and held out my hand. “Yes, and you must be Darby.”

She ignored my outstretched hand as she stared intently into my eyes, as if daring me to look away first. “You’re hot.”

“Uhhh…” My eyes darted nervously over my shoulder as I tried to decide if this was some sort of trap, or very aggressive flirting—neither of which I was interested in.

“And I know my Lily. She wears that hideous cardigan everywhere which makes her look like some sort of anemic ghost.” She removed her sunglasses from atop her head and closed them with a snap. “Boys like you normally go for aesthetics over substance. So, please explain what you’re doing seducing my best friend.”

“The cardigan is awful,” I blurted out. Darby raised an eyebrow, and I scrambled to get to the point I actually wanted to make. “But Lily is beautiful, and she’s kind.” I paused, remembering her rage over my treatment of her books the first day we’d met. “Most of the time. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t intend to hurt her.
